1. At the apex of the triangle is the action of the Holy Spirit
a. His role is the key to the entire process
2. The function of the holy spirit
a. First: To move in our minds and our souls to present Jesus and the reality of his kingdom
i. Through the gospel in contrast to the realities life without God
ii. Only able to believe Jesus is the one by the spiritual movements of God
1. 1 Corinthians 12:3 “Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.”
2. John 3:5 “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.’”
b. Then: After we receive new life, the spirit works in us to enable us to become Christlike
i. Transforms our minds to think like Christ
1. Philippians Chapter 2 tells us what that is
ii. Gives us the fruits of the spirit act like Christ
1. Galatians 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
3. Most people tend to focus on one part or the other
a. Focus only on the gifts of the Spirit
i. Think we don’t have to do anything, it will all be taken care of
b. Focus on our part
i. We can work at it hard enough and do it on our own
c. Need to remember it is a balance
i. Part of it is in our control
1. How we react to Tests and Trials in our Life
2. Planned Disciplines
ii. We can’t do it without God
1. John 15:5 “apart from me you can do nothing.”
Small Group Questions: Re-read Galatians 5:22-26
1. Describe in your own words what each of the fruits of the spirit mean.
a. Which fruits of the spirit do you feel like you already have?
b. Which fruits of the spirit do you not have or not want? Why?
c. Are there any fruits that you feel like you don’t ever really need? Why?
2. What does it mean to crucify our “sinful nature?” (Hint: Galatians 2:20)
3. How do we “keep in step with the spirit?” (Hint: Psalm 32:8-10, )
4. Why does Paul warn us against “provoking and envying each other?” (Hint: Galatians 5:13-15)
